Mafia II HUD/UI Revealed
by K. Michael Alexander
Sal over at ScrawFX.com posted a link to the German Mafia-Daily.net who revealed a few screenshots showing some UI elements and the HUD for 2KCzech‘s Mafia II. Looks slick, stylized and simple, nothing too overcomplicated, doesn’t take up obscene amounts of screen space.
On thing to note: The dial in the lower right of the screen. It certainly looks like a speedometer too me. I am wondering how necessary a speedometer is in a GTA style game. Can you get pulled over for speeding or will it just add unnecessary clutter? Maybe this isn’t a speedometer and it’s something else. If not, is it effective to have a HUD element stylized like it would provide specific information when it in fact communicates something else entirely? Probably not. [Ed. Seems you CAN get pulled over for minor offenses as well, hence the necessity of a speedometer in the lower right corner. Thanks Sal! Hit the comment to see Sal's remakes on the subject.]

Hey, it’s Sal from SCRAWL.
Just to answer your question, the original Mafia had a speedometer as well. (see image here). Police would sometimes pull you over for minor offenses such as speeding or running a red light. So that’s what that is all about.
Thanks for the insight Sal! I’ll update the post.
